In The Spotlight: The Female Voices of Today’s Music Scene

We are blessed to be alive at a time that these incredible artists are making music.

In recent weeks of my journey of discovering music and listening to new artists, I have noticed that a lot of the music that I am adding to my playlists has been from some amazing female artists from around the world; mostly from the UK, but some from further afield. This realisation provoked me to write about them, and recommend some of my current favourite artists.

My current genre rabbit-hole has been neo-soul. This recent obsession of mine has been a process of listening through genres like 90’s hip hop jazz, soul, funk, and R&B, which in recent months has been evolving into a playlist of soul and neo-soul music which I cannot stop listening to and adding new music to.

Here are ten of my favourite artists to have made their way into my playlists recently. They are far too good to gatekeep…

GREENTEA PENG

Neo-Soul / Psychedelic R&B

I first started listening to Greentea Peng when her song ‘Hu Man’ was featured in my recommended music. I quickly became a fan, and listened to her album ‘Greenzone 108’ in its entirety in one sitting.

YAZMIN LACEY

Jazzy Soul / R&B

Yazmin has been a more recent addition to my rotation as of late, with her song ‘Bad Company’ introducing me to her music. More recently, I heard her collaboration with another great artist, Ezra Collective, on the song ‘God Gave Me Feet For Dancing‘, which has a lovely sunny vibe to it.

REMI WOLF

Pop / Funk

Admittedly, I haven’t listened to much of Remi’s music, however her song ‘Cinderella‘ has been heavily played recently. The song combines a pop vibe with a funk type beat, and is absolutely addictive.

ADI OASIS

Soul / Funk / R&B

Adi’s music is a constant 10/10 for me, every song that I hear gets added to my playlist. One song I can’t get enough of lately is ‘Get It Got It‘ , which is quickly becoming a song that I consider to be perfect. I cannot recommend Adi Oasis enough.

CLEO SOL

Soul / Neo Soul / R&B

Cleo’s music is a refreshing mix of soulful genres, with her songs ‘Self‘, ‘Life Will Be‘, and ‘Sunshine‘ being my current personal favourites. Fans of Cleo will be pleased to know she is also the singer in the British music collective, Sault, who are also highly recommended.

RAQUEL MARTINS

Neo-Soul / Jazz / World Influence

Raquel’s music has a beautiful light and jazzy vibe, with an influence of latin and jazz elements. My current favourites are ‘Empty Flower‘, ‘Fragile Eyes‘ and ‘Mountains‘, however her whole Empty Flower EP is a must-listen.

CLAIRO

Alternative / Indie

Clairo first became a regular in my rotation with her songs ‘4EVER‘ and ‘Pretty Girl‘. Her music has a very simplistic and fun vibe, and I have re-discovered my love for her music with ‘Sexy For Someone‘ quickly making its way into my playlist.

ELOISE

Soul / Pop

Eloise has a very calm but captivating sound, with her song ‘Left Side‘ being my introduction to her music. My personal favourite of hers is the song ‘Giant Feelings‘, combining this style with a big chorus and addictive melody.

LUCY ROSE

Alternative / Indie

Lucy’s music has an amazing ambience, combined with a soulful voice and spacious instrumentation. Her songs ‘Question It All‘ and ‘White Car‘ where my introduction to her music, but my recent favourite has been ‘Light As Grass‘.

OLIVIA DEAN

Soul / Jazz / R&B

My last feature on this list is my current favourite artist. Olivia’s music is constantly refreshing to hear, with each of her songs having a beautiful soul and uplifting vibe. Some songs I can’t stop listening to are ‘Ladies Room‘, ‘Time‘, ‘Password Change‘ and ‘Dangerously Easy‘.

These artists are among an ever-growing list of incredible people making music today, shaping the music industry with their unique and captivating sound and lyricism. If you like the music featured in this list, I would recommend having a listen to my Spotify playlist, Vibes, which contains more incredible music like it
