How to build a playlist with that ‘main character’ vibe.
First things first, building a playlist to soundtrack your life requires you to think about what kind of movie you want your life to be…
For me, this thought came to me after watching one of my personal favourite films, the 2013 adventure-comedy film, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. This film affected me for multiple reasons; largely because it gave me severely itchy feet, but also showed me how music in a film can perfectly uplift and enhance the experience of watching.
This is when my playlist started, simply titled ‘Alex.’ I wanted to make a playlist that uplifts and enhances my every-day life, and makes me feel as though I am the main character in a film about me.
Creating the playlist this way was different to any playlist that I’ve made before – chasing music based on a feeling it gives me, rather than because of a particular genre or artist.
Whether you base your playlist off a film you like, a series you have just finished, or even your favourite character in your favourite book, curating music around a feeling can leave you with a playlist that never gets old.

Some of my personal favourite songs from this playlist…
- Shy – Hether
- Congratulations – MGMT
- Chinese Translation – M.Ward
- Can I Believe You – Fleet Foxes
- Lo on the Hi-Way – Jordana, TV Girl
- That Life – Unknown Mortal Orchestra
I highly recommend starting your own ‘Life Soundtrack’ playlist, it will make the mundane seem that little bit more captivating.
